Putting basics

Putting is very individual as you can tell if you watched the masters this weekend. There are hundreds of grips styles. As you can see in the pictures below there are the standard, left hand low, Claw, pencil, arm lock and several other types of methods.

Why do so many tour players use so many different grips? They are trying for a stable grip that reduces changes in position during the stroke helping them to use primarily there shoulders.

Once you find a grip that is comfortable for you and reduces rotation and wrist deviation you can then move on to the other fundamental.

  1. Primarily use shoulders to move the putter.
  2. Try to keep elbows in the same position during the stroke.
  3. The path of the stroke should work on a small arc from inside returning to inside.
  4. Limit, reduce or eradicate any wrist motion during the stroke.
  5. For distance control take the putter back about an inch for every foot you are trying to hit the putt.
  6. Get your eyes aligned over the ball at address
  7. Get your glutes involved at set up so your legs are stable
  8. Do not keep your head still, good putters head move away from the target just before impact.
  9. Keep your eyes down, don’t look up to see the put.
  10. Practice, Practice, Practice.
